This picture is magical. Hard work and happiness. This wasn't the fun of cutting wood for a campfire. This was real work on a real farm. I'm sure after this they went on to more farm jobs, perhaps she killed and cooked the chicken as well as made the bread (by hand) for dinner while he fed and milked the cows.
.
Oh the joys of days gone by. Have the modern times really made life better for us? Now we have gadgets to save us time, but that just means that more is expected of us. We can buy anything we want at stores - no more home-made dresses or tool boxes. No more knowing exactly how the corn and beef you're eating was raised. No need to buy "Organic" because pesticides weren't in use like they are today. No environmental asthma.
.
We found this picture in my Nana's photo album. One photo album for a lifetime. So different from today. And now with digital cameras we don't even print off most of our photos!
My Nana is the woman in the photo. She was born and raised on a farm in Saskatchewan. I feel that the country roots never left our family, even though she moved to Vancouver after WW2 and raised her children there.
.
But we all longed for the country. My parents were constantly looking at homes across the bridge and outside of the city. My Mom, my sister and I used to have & ride horses and my favourite childhood summers were those spent camping. It's no wonder I lived on an island in the Pacific for 3 straight summers!
.
So as I stare at these smiles, will you wonder with me? I wish that I knew the story along with the old black and white photograph. I wish the margins held a journal entry of that day, hand written with an ink pen by my Nana. I wish I knew just how "everyday" or how wildly special this day had been. I wish I knew more about Jack. I wish I knew more about Grace - this young woman before Jack was killed in WW2, before she moved to BC, before she married my Papa, before she had 3 children, before her son died before he turned 1 because he had a hole in his heart and they didn't have the technology that they do today.
.
I wish my Nana were still alive.

(NB: writing tip: it's all in the wording. "An island in the Pacific"... are you thinking warm sunshine, coconuts, and South Pacific? Nope. NorthWest Pacific - Georgia Straight.)

A wonderfully warm piece. We seem to be speeding through life with very little time to tell stories and leave memories. Is that why blogs have become so personally important? I enjoyed catching up with your posts and excellent photos. Cassie and the pussy willows are each priceless.
