Yesterday the hill was covered in snow and I couldn't tell where the exact spot was that I had seen the "cat." This led me to believe that it was, in fact, a cat and not a patch of snow as I had earlier decided. But today the snow has melted and the white spot is there, looking from a distance just like a cat sitting tall.
I got to see a bald eagle (why are they called "bald" when they aren't? They have white feathers on the top of their heads, which is in contrast to their black body feathers, but they're not bald!) stretch his wings while perched on the tip of an evergreen. At first I wondered how the wind was blowing two branches up in a V shape! Then I watched the branches gracefully go down and get blown back up then go back down again. It was then that my logical brain kicked in and deduced that there must be a bird at the top of the tree.
I had not yet seen any eagles out here so I was pleasantly surprised! It sure beats ravens, magpies and chickadees on the grandeur scale. But then it got me thinking... why do we value eagles? What good do they do? Is it because they rest atop the tips of trees and build nests in craggy rocks that we are unable to reach? Does it appeal to our spirit of individuality? 'Cuz I really find Magpies beautiful, even if they do eat the eggs of smaller birds. I love the look of their black & white against snow. And I love the "deedeedee" sound the Chickadees make all Spring and Summer. Plus they're so tiny, they're cute!
Hmmm. Chickadees are black and white, aren't they? I'm seeing a pattern here. Eagles, Magpies, Chickadees are all black and white (I wrote that just in case you missed the pattern). Ravens are black. I haven't seen any Doves out here (Doves are white). Now I'll have to pay attention to see if we have any birds out here that have an actual colour! Were you aware that black and white are not actual colours? I learned me that in art class.
We have frogs in my yard. They live in the faerie glen. I haven't seen them since the summer, but I know they will be there because last year when we were looking at the house, we heard a ton of frogs. Frogs are green.
