Publication! Creativity Portal

I have a writing prompt photo adventure series on display at the Creativity Portal. It birthed as a result of my world travels and my passion for writing. I know that many people want to write, but some have difficulty coming up with ideas on their own. Sometimes, they need a prompt. Thus the idea to merge my photography with writing prompts was born. While the prompts influence a beginning, my goal is to keep them vague in order to allow for maximum creativity on the part of the reader.

I began employing the 5 senses while teaching writing to my students and finding that some of them needed a boost to get them imagining. I created a 5 senses area in my classroom where students could go if they weren't coming up with a writing idea on their own. My theory was that by engaging one of the 5 senses, they would come up with an idea and begin writing.

My latest submission is on the front page! http://www.creativity-portal.com/ . I will be submitting monthly articles or writing prompts so check back often!

Happy reading & writing!!!!

Sunday Scribblings: Weddings

She left her husband at quarter to midnight. The fist in her face did it. Something invisible snapped deep within. She stepped out into the midnight of a star-filled sky.

On the day of her wedding she had been so innocent in a white off-the-shoulder gown, A-line cut, crinolin covered in sheer organza. She could never have predicted that she would end up in this place-with-no-name, adrenaline and shock numbing her thoughts and strength forcing her to walk, not run, out the door and down the driveway.

You've come a long way baby!

I have just received such encouraging news about my writing and my writing career that I am building, from the bottom up.
I have so much swimming in my head and this is what I choose to let out:
Do not hide.
Let your dreams see the light, whatever form that takes.
They will grow. They will take on lives of their own.
It is amazing what can happen (it may take years) when you do not hide and follow your heart, no matter the obstacles.
Dreams yet unborn.
I love that line from a poem whose author I have forgotten.
There is so much potential in each of us. It is up to us to develop our God-given talents. Our abilities are gifts from the Great Creator to us and in creating, we honour Him/Her. As we develop our gifts we grow our talent.

I just have to show you two pictures to prove how far I have come in three years. Pictures speak 1000 words, and I'm sure you can easily think of 1001 :-P
Bearing invisible scars, I have overcome and am overcoming,
and am continuing to fight to get into the light.
There is so much light people, so much room for all of our talent in this world!
We need to share our gifts with each other!!!

with a heart overflowing with peace, joy and love....
I wish all that for you as well today!

The Invitation

"Take a little piece of my heart."

No, Janis Joplin. No.

I am tired of someone taking pieces of my heart. I am free to guard my heart, to protect it, for within it springs a well of life. I do not want to be careless with it. My heart is good. It is beautiful, compassionate, delicate. It needs protecting. But it does not need to be guarded so well that no one can enter.

I have found love. I realize that I never took my heart back from someone and that someone has re-entered my life and I have discovered that even when I tried to take my heart back, my heart had run away on me and rested within his.

“The true lover is the man who can thrill you by kissing your forehead or smiling into your eyes.”
Marilyn Monroe
~
He said that he would scream his love for me from the top of a mountain. I choose to declare my love on my blog. Both screaming into the universe, into the wind, into the ears of people who choose to hear. Or not. It doesn't matter to us if a tree falls and makes a sound in a forest even if no one is there to hear it. An invitation to love reciprocated. The RSVP came in and resulted in complete peace in each other's arms.

"We got our backs against the ocean / It's just us against the world / Looking at all or nothing / Babe it's you and I."

I got published by the SFU Writing & Publishing Program (!!!). I entered the Downtown (Vancouver) Memory Project contest early this year and was one of the selected authors! The works were printed in black and white then framed in silver. They were featured at the SFU Harbour Centre in the Spring - see photo above. In November ('til Jan. 2009) they will be featured at the Vancouver Museum!!!

is a slideshow of the featured memories. Scroll through, read them and look for mine:
Kristi Tencarre
with a big letter E
(and no, the big letters do not make a secret word, unless it's so secret I didn't put the puzzle together... if you do you better leave me a comment!!! :-p .)

Isn't this exciting!!!
(Photos were taken by my camera phone so they're not the best quality.... )
:-) Enjoy!

Minou, my kitten

I got my kitten Minoushka at 8 weeks. She was in an SPCA foster home with her 3 sisters and 2 brothers. All the girls were Tortoiseshell and the males were Tabbies. It was difficult to decide which one and only one of her litter I would take home! However, she chose me... when I picked her up, she cuddled in, her paw over and around my hand and began purring. Once at my home, she purred for over 24 hours straight... she has a loud purr. She continues to cuddle in and purr.

I have been sick this weekend and today is the first day I have felt better. I spent a gloriously relaxing morning being creative and scrapbooking my kitten who is now 1 years old and 3 mos. She is my dog-cat... she follows me around the house, still falls asleep on my chest and loves to play in the garden even if I'm not outside.

I have been wanting to scrapbook her and today was the perfect day. Barbara Abercrombie's writing prompt inspired me to stop putting it off and do what I've been wanting to do for a while (ever wonder how the universe responds to your desires? I even bought a cat page of scrapbooking stickers this weekend!!!) Write about your pet, or a pet you once had, or why you never wanted a pet. Then post here! You can be to the point or long-winded, you can add pictures or use only words.

Minou just jumped in the window, so I should go feed her....

writing prompt #10 ~ living words

Hey y'all!!!

Have any of you read a story that just haunts you? I can't stop thinking about a story I read 5 years ago (!) in one of those magazines you get in the back of the seat in front of you on a plane. I don't remember the author's name or the article title, but the subject matter haunts me still.

As writers, our names may be forgotten, but our words can live on! Think of a piece you have read that has stood out in your mind. How did the author set up the structure? Were the paragraphs short or long? What about character development, language, subject matter? Look at a piece on which you are working now and dissect it as if someone other than you is reading it. How can you make it stand out from all the other articles being printed around the world?

Wednesday Writing Prompt #9 ~ Mining Quotes

I collect quotes. I also collect first lines or great stand apart lines from novels & short stories. They are amazing story starters.

Begin a short story with the first line: "Before this day is over, Aunt Effie will go crazy."

Life is a magic vase...

I can't sleep. I get hit with this insomnia thing every once in a while. Today, it hit. No more waves crashing against the shore (meaning fatigue), tonight it's been a tsunami out to sea (of wakefullness). But I have a solid boat that is floating me and I have filled my mind with words, attempted to drain my mind of words, and thought and thunk and pet my cat.

I found this an interesting thought to ponder:
.
"Life is a magic vase filled to the brim; so made that you cannot dip into it nor draw from it; but it overflows into the hand that drops treasures into it-drop in malice and it overflows hate; drop in charity and it overflows love."
~ John Ruskin

writing prompt #8 ~ everyday object poetry

Hey fellow writers and readers!

Today's creative writing prompt comes from an idea on Barbara Abercrombie's website "Writing Time" in which you take an everyday object and write a poem about that, starting each line with the name of the object. This format got Raymond Carver's poem "The Car" published! Barbara writes: "This exercise was inspired by Raymond Carver’s poem “The Car”, which is the least “poetic” poem you’ll ever read."

Share your writing with us!

~ changes ~

Over the next little while, there will be a few changes to the face of my blog. However, it is still me, Skyelark, that is the author. I have been blogging here since February 2006 and I still love it. The changes you see here in my writing and featured art work reflect the changes in my life. I am a buttefly emerging from her coccoon, a free spirit learning that it is okay to be free and that I will still be accepted.

Recently, I discovered that my family history contains Tinkers from Ireland. This has led me on to my own discovery journey and you will see the effects of that reflected in my musing here.

Also, I am going to begin a weekly writing prompt here. I hope you will be inspired. I would love for you to share your writing and will include a "Mr Linky" so that you can link your blog directly to this site (like in the post below this one). If you do not have a blog, feel free to include your piece in "comments." You will be able to see all my writing prompts if you click on the right hand bar that has all my labels and click "writing prompts."

I dream of a community of writers, artists, and free spirits that can meander here and jump into worlds of art & creativity.

Blessings to each & every one of you!

writing prompt #7

"It just couldn't have been any other way."

What couldn't have been any other way? The life you're living now? The dreams you have? The weather? Write from your heart. Put pen to paper, fingers to keyboard and list or muse on what could not have been any other way. Let your thoughts flow out of you, drain those hidden gems. Don't edit yourself. If you feel like sharing, post here!

I discovered this great new online scrapbooking website that is free and has all these great templates .... www.scrapblog.com If you're into scrapbooking, or not yet into it and want to try it out for FREE and nothing to buy or make a mess on the kitchen table... use your digital pictures (so you don't have to wait until you have a chance to go to the printers and come back, thus losing your scrapbooking momentum)......

I think I'm hooked. Now maybe I'll try the tangible scrapbooking????

ps. that is me in the picture. Must have been a Sunday as I'm dressed for church with my spring coat and matching hat. :-)
